O'Brien Wins Senior Match Play Invitational
SCARBOROUGH – Just last month, Mike O’Brien (Biddeford-Saco CC) won the Maine Senior Championship to get the monkey off his back and win his first individual MSGA championship after years of close calls. He kept that momentum going this week at the 2nd Senior Match Play Invitational, winning four matches in two days to claim the title, defeating Reid Birdsall (Bath GC) 2&1 in the finals.
Playing this week at Prouts Neck CC along the Atlantic Ocean in Scarborough, O’Brien came into the Senior Match Play as the #1 seed and advanced easily in his first two matches to move on to Friday. He defeated Craig Lapierre (Toddy Brook GC) in the semifinals 3&1 to move to the finals. On the other side of the bracket, Birdsall advanced over Doug Self (Brunswick GC) 3&2 in the morning semifinal.
In the finals, the match was close most of the way, and Birdsall led at the turn with a 2-up lead. Playing in difficult winds at the seaside course, O’Brien was able to rally and make a charge, making pars that were winning holes. Despite a birdie by Birdsall on 16 to get back to 1 down with two to play, O’Brien was able to close out the match on 17 to win 2&1.
