Mike O'Brien Wins Maine Senior Amateur
VASSALBORO – Just one year ago at the Maine Senior Championship after losing on the first playoff hole, Mike O’Brien knew he had the game to win the state’s top senior golf tournament. This year O’Brien again found himself in the final pairing with a chance to win the title, and this time the 57-year old from Biddeford was able to get it done, posting a final round 73 for a two-day total of 147 (+3) and a four shot victory.
Playing alongside six-time Senior champion Mark Plummer and current Senior Player of the Year leader Keith Patterson, it was going to be no small task for O’Brien to emerge victorious. He got the start he needed though, opening with two pars and an eagle at Natanis' short par-5 3rd hole. Both Plummer and Patterson started moving backwards early in their rounds, and O’Brien quickly found himself with a lead that he would hold onto the rest of the day.
After going out in 34, O’Brien made a sloppy double bogey on 10, but quickly got back to playing steady golf for the rest of the back nine. With Plummer and Patterson both struggling on the day, and with no one from the groups ahead making a serious run, his lead had grown to multiple shots with a few holes to play. O'Brien knew he simply needed to play smart coming in to win the title, which he was able to do in front of a supportive crowd of his peers overlooking the 18th green.
O’Brien has won multiple MSGA championships, but always with the help of some teammates. He’s a past winner of the Mixed, Four-Ball, and Senior Club Team Championships, but an individual title had continued to elude him – until today.
Finishing in second place were Len Cole and Mike Doucette. Cole had the low score of the second round, firing an even-par 72 to finish at 151. Doucette matched Cole at 149 with rounds of 76-75. Fourth went to Wayne Johnson at 152, followed by a four-way tie at fifth between Patterson, Plummer, Phil Barter, and Vance Gray at 153.
All players who finished in the top six will earn an automatic invitation to the Senior Match Play Invitational, to be contested in late September at Prouts Neck CC.
