Club Team & Senior Club Team Recap

May 25, 2021

The MSGA championship season kicked off over the weekend with the Club Team and Senior Club Team Championships at Belgrade Lakes. In these always popular events, teams of four players from the same golf club competed in a best two ball format against clubs from across the state of Maine. Both events came down to the final hole, but when the dust settled, the team from Val Halla claimed the Club Team event and Martindale won the Senior Club Team.

The Club Team was played on Sunday and the winning team ended up coming from the very first tee time of the day. Representing Val Halla GC, the team of Mike Arsenault, Jr., Joe Gildart, Brian Knipp, and Mike Steinberg set the pace early with a score of 131 (-11). After making the turn at -6, the team dropped a shot on 11 to fall to -5. But starting on 14, they picked up another birdie and kept their foot on the pedal all the way to the clubhouse. Arsenault made birdie on the last four holes to get the team in the house at -11, a score that held the rest of the day.

Finishing in a tie for second were two teams of former champions from years past. Biddeford-Saco (Brian Angis, Joe Hamilton, Zach Golojuch, and Jimmy Quentin) shot -5 on both sides to post 132 (-10) to finish just one back. Brunswick GC (Jeff Cole, Mike Doran, Caleb Manuel, and Garrett Olson) got off to a torrid start by making the turn at -10, but played the back nine in even par to finish tied for second.

On the net side, the low score of the day came from the team from Samoset Resort, comprised of Jamie Boutin, Jon Hardy, Ricky Jones, and Chris Seavey. Martindale’s Kelly Cates had the shot of the day, making an ace on the second hole

On Monday the MSGA was right back at Belgrade Lakes on a perfect sunny day for the Senior Club Team Championship. Just like the day before, the event came down to the wire. Martindale CC (Steve Gallagher, Bobby Myers, Rocky Myers, and Russ Scudder) was the first in the clubhouse with a score of -5 (137), thanks in part to birdies from Bobby Myers on three of the last four holes. Just a few groups behind was Biddeford-Saco CC (Ron Dery, Scott Dewitt, Mike O’Brien, and Keith Patterson), who also posted 137 to join them atop the leaderboard.

As the day wore on it looked like the two teams would share the title, but a birdie on the last from Cape Arundel CC (Colin Ahern, William Cox, Michael Haas, and Blair Heavey) put them in the group of three teams tied at -5.

Per the Terms of Competition laid out prior to the tournament, if two teams share the lead at the end of the day they are named co-champions, but if more than two teams are tied, a tie-breaker is used to settle the score. The USGA tiebreaker of the best back nine score was used, and after the card match, the team from Martindale was named the champion of the event.

The net winners of the Senior Club Team Championship came from Dutch Elm GC, represented by Paul Lamontagne, Pat Laroche, Lou Macdonald, and Paul Nichols.

This marks the 16th time that Belgrade Lakes GC has hosted the Club Team Championship and 7th time hosting the Senior Club Team Championship. The golf course opened in 1998 to rave reviews, and was recently ranked by Golf Digest as one of the top 100 public golf courses in the United States.
