Cole Leads Senior Amateur After Round 1
PORTLAND – The 2020 Maine Senior Amateur started off under ominous skies at Riverside GC this morning, and lightning moved through the area delaying play just before 8:00 am. Play was halted for an hour as the storm moved through, and once the weather passed the field was treated to a beautiful day. After the dust settled, Len Cole stood alone atop the leaderboard after posting an opening 69 (-3) at Riverside’s North Course.
Cole, the 2018 champion of this event and reigning Maine Senior Player of the Year, made the turn at one-over par before turning on the jets on the back nine. With five birdies on the back against just one bogey, his inward 32 left him one shot clear of James O’Sullivan (70) with 18 to play. Home club member Daniel Falcone shot 71 in the first pairing of the day, and is joined by Michael O’Brien in third place at -1.
At even-par 72 are six-time Senior champion Mark Plummer and 2015 champion Gary Manoogian. The two are joined in sixth place by Tom Chard.
Tomorrow’s final round returns to Riverside’s North course, with the leaders teeing off at 1:00 pm.
The 2020 Maine Senior Amateur Championship is a full field event of 110 golfers that will take on Portland's municipal North Course on August 18-19 to determine the state's top golfer aged 55 and older.
