Gilmartin Leads After Round 1 of The Maine Event
MANCHESTER – The 2020 Charlie’s Maine Open was cancelled earlier this year due to COVID-19, but the MSGA wanted to keep an important event on the schedule to give Maine players a chance to compete among the state’s best golfers. The Maine Event was born, and in today’s first round of this inaugural event, 118 Maine golfers teed it up in the new tournament open to professionals and amateurs that reside in the Pine Tree State.
After the first round, John Gilmartin of the host club Augusta CC led all scorers with an opening 67 (-3) to take a one-shot lead entering tomorrow’s final round. He will be joined by the only other two players who broke par today in Caleb Manuel (68) and Jeff Seavey (69). Five players sit at even-par after opening rounds of 70, including a slew of Maine amateurs with past championships under their belts, along with pro Shawn Warren coming back from playing in the PGA Championship at Harding Park last week.
The women’s division is led by Ruby Haylock, who won the Maine Women’s Amateur at Augusta CC a few weeks back. Her first round of 76 has her four shots clear of the current Maine Junior champion Lindsay Cote and former MWA champion Bailey Plourde.
This event features a multitude of flights based on gender and professional and amateur status, so click on the links below to see results from the entire field based on divisions.
Tomorrow’s final round moves up the road to nearby Waterville CC, where play will commence at 7:00 am. The leaders will peg it up at 1:10 pm.
