Inaugural Maine Event Underway at Augusta CC
Earlier this spring, the Maine State Golf Association decided to cancel the Charlie's Maine Open due to COVID-19 travel restrictions for out-of-state professionals. The Maine Open is the longest-running event contested annually by the MSGA, and it left a hole on the schedule with its absence in the 2020 tournament season. A new event was created to fill the void, and The Maine Event was created to give Maine golfers another chance at a 36-hole event in an effort to find a champion golfer for the year.
The difference this year is that the tournament is open to all Maine golfers, whether male or female, amateur or professional. With the merger of the MSGA with the two women’s amateur associations in 2018, now seemed the perfect time to run an event open to all Maine players. This year’s inaugural event features 118 players from across the state and features players of all ages, abilities, and genders. Charlie's Motor Mall of Augusta has stayed on as the title sponsor of the event, continuing its longstanding support of the MSGA.
The tournament will be played on August 12-13, with the first round at Augusta CC and the second round at Waterville CC. This year’s field features some of the top players in the state, both on the professional and amateur side of the game. We look forward to the first playing of this event this week at some great golf courses.
