Kannegieser, Hamilton to Meet in Match Play Final
Over the last two days, 30 matches have been played at Spring Meadows GC and 30 golfers have been sent home in the single-elimination bracket. But two players remain after surviving their semifinal matches this afternoon, with defending champion Will Kannegieser finding his way back to the final match where he'll square off against Joe Hamilton at 7:00 am tomorrow morning.
In a repeat match from last year's final, Kannegieser was up against Caleb Manuel, fresh off a win last week at the Maine Junior Championship. Last year's final needed extra holes, and today's semifinal match went the distance as well, with Kannegieser holding on to a 1-up victory. Kannegieser was 2-up thru three holes and never trailed in the match that went all 18 holes. With normal match play concessions, he was two-under par on the round to edge out Manuel for the second straight year. Dating back to last year, this was the ninth straight match that Kannegieser has won. Dating back to 2016 when he was runner-up, he has won 15 of his last 17 matches.
He will be met in the finals by Joe Hamilton of Biddeford-Saco CC, who took out #1 seed and 2012 Match Play champion John Hayes in the other semifinal. Hamilton is a former winner of the Club Team Champion and last year's Four-Ball Championship, but is looking for his first individual MSGA major championship. He also was 2-up early in his match and never trailed, and closed out Hayes in style with a birdie 2 on the par-3 16th hole to win his match 3&2.
Tomorrow's Final Match:
7:00 am: Will Kannegieser (2) vs. Joe Hamilton (5)
We're down to four players left at the 2020 Match Play Invitational, with three of the top four seeds still standing heading into the semifinals. In the first match, 2012 Match Play champion John Hayes (1) will take on fellow mid-amateur Joe Hamilton (5). The other semifinal features the two players that dueled it out in last year's finals at Point Sebago GC, with Will Kannegieser (2) taking on Caleb Manuel (3). Kannegieser won last year's Match Play in dramatic fashion in extra holes.
11:00 am: John Hayes (1) vs. Joe Hamilton (5)
