For immediate release: July 8, 2020

SACO – Day two of the 2020 Maine Amateur Championship saw some stellar play from the field at Biddeford-Saco CC today, with twelve players breaking par in the second round. Cole Anderson (Samoset Resort), the defending champion from last year’s event, fired a second round 67 (-4) to take a three-stroke lead entering tomorrow’s final round. His two-day total of 71-67—138 leads a group of six players tied for second at -1.

Among those in the group at second place is Mike Arsenault, Jr. (Gorham CC), who shot the low round of the championship so far with a round of 66. His round included six birdies against just one bogey to vault him up the leaderboard after an opening 75. He will join Anderson in the final pairing tomorrow morning at 10:34 am with perennial contender Drew Powell (Penobscot Valley CC).

Also at one-under par 141 are Caleb Manuel (Brunswick GC), Will Kannegieser (Martindale CC), and 2015 Maine Amateur Champion John Hayes (Purpoodock Club). The trio will head out in the second-to-last group at 10:23 am. Tim Desmarais (Deep Brook GC) is the only other player in the field after two days, also at 141 after a second round 68.

Of note from today’s second round was the bounce-back from 18-year old Tyler Baker (Portland CC), who rebounded from an opening 80 with a round of 67. Additionally, Jim Quinn (Augusta CC), the oldest player in the field this year, shot his age with a round of 72 to make the cut by two strokes with 148.

The cut for this year’s event fell at 150 (+8), the lowest cut in recent memory. In all, 44 players made the cut, which gives them a berth into the 2021 Maine Amateur Championship at Kebo Valley GC in Bar Harbor.

Tomorrow's final round will commence at 8:00 am.
