Bean & Downing Win Senior Four-Ball Championship
MANCHESTER, ME – After a spring where the golf season was slow to get off the ground, the Maine State Golf Association finally crowned the first champions of the 2020 season. Playing under sunny skies on a perfect summer day at Augusta CC, the team of Tom Bean (Salmon Falls GC) and John Downing (Purpoodock Club) won the Senior Four-Ball Championship with a score of 64 (-6).
In this format, the better score of both players on each two-man team counts as the team score. Bean and Downing made five birdies in their first 16 holes before dropping their only shot of the day on the par-3 17th hole. Bean finished strong for the team with a chip-in eagle on 18 to secure the win. This marks the third time in the 13-year history of the event that Bean and Downing have teamed up to win this championship.
Keith Patterson and Scott Dewitt, both who play out of Biddeford-Saco CC, finished in solo second with a score of 66. Three teams tied in third place with 67.
On the net side, Ron Looman and John Garrity (Natanis GC) had the low score of the day, taking home first place with a score of 59.
