Hardy and Jones Lead Four-Ball After Round 1
NORTHEAST HARBOR -- On a morning where cold temperatures and gusty winds reared their head at Northeast Harbor GC on Mount Desert Island, Ricky Jones and Jon Hardy led all teams with an opening round 65 (-5) to take the early lead in the 2019 Four-Ball Championship. In this format that takes the best individual score of the two-player team on each hole, the duo from Samoset Resort birdied seven holes at Northeast Harbor, offsetting two bogeys on the day.
They sit on a one-stroke lead over Brian Angis and Joe Hamilton (Biddeford-Saco CC), who carded 66 (-4). One back after a score of 67 are the winners of this event back in 2014, Ashley Fifield (Martindale CC) and Mike O’Brien (Biddeford-Saco CC).
Jones made five birdies on his own ball on the day, including three of the first four holes. Hardy chimed in with a few of his own, including the only birdie of the day on the difficult 202 yard par-3 13th hole. This is one of the few MSGA championships that Jones has not claimed in his career, and he’s put himself in contention with Hardy to collect the hardware tomorrow.
The second round of this event will shift venues to the other side of Mount Desert Island tomorrow to Kebo Valley GC, where the field will play in the final round of the MSGA championship season.
