Manoogian Leads at Senior Amateur
YORK – Gary Manoogian bogeyed the first hole at York Golf & Tennis Club like the majority of players in the field during the first round of the Maine Senior Amateur Championship, but the Falmouth CC member didn’t let the early miscue get him down. He followed the opening bogey on the difficult par-3 first hole with 17 subsequent pars to shoot 71 (+1) and take the lead going into tomorrow’s final round.
Manoogian, who won this title in 2015 at Brunswick GC, played very steady at the Donald Ross layout to claim the overnight lead. Trailing just one shot back sits defending champion Len Cole, who has been a force in Maine senior golf for the last two years since turning 55. Cole also plays out of Falmouth CC and is a regular partner of Manoogian in MSGA events.
Joining Cole and Manoogian in the final pairing tomorrow is Craig Lapierre of Toddy Brook GC, who used three birdies on his round to shoot 72. This will be the first final pairing in an MSGA championship for Lapierre.
It is a tight leaderboard at the top entering tomorrow’s final round, as 19 players—including a handful of past winners—sit within five strokes of the lead, meaning this tournament is still anyone’s game. Play will commence tomorrow morning at 7:30 am.
