Langevin Leads Entering MWA Final Round
The final round of the 2019 Maine Women's Amateur Championship is now underway under sunny skies at Webhannet GC in Kennebunk. Following a rain-filled day yesterday that forced the second round to be cancelled, the event is now a 36-hole stroke play event.
Round 1 Notes:
Carrie Langevin would have had a great match against the scorecard at Webhannet GC in today’s first round of the 2019 Maine Women’s Amateur Championship. The Portland CC member was the model of consistency in the opening round, carding 17 pars against one lone bogey on the 12th hole. Her opening round of 73 (+1) was good enough to take a one stroke lead into tomorrow’s second round.
Trailing only one stroke behind with a score of 74 (+2) are Kristen Kannegieser (Martindale CC) and Jordan Laplume (Dunegrass GC). Kannegieser was a two-time champion of the WMSGA Championship, having won in 2007 and 2010. Prior to the creation of the Maine Women’s Amateur, the SMWGA and WMSGA each ran their own respective championship events, but in 2011 the tournaments were combined to create one eventto crown a state champ.
Kannegieser has also already won an MSGA championship this season, having claimed the Mixed Championship in June with her son Will.
Laplume has been in this situation before as well, having finished as runner-up in last year’s championship at Rockland GC. The rising sophomore at Merrimack College fell three shots short to last year’s winner Bailey Plourde, who is not in the field this week due to a summer internship with the Kentucky Golf Association.
Rounding out the top five after the first day are Erin Holmes (Val Halla GC) and Mary Brandes (The Woodlands Club). Both players carded 78 (+6).
This year’s championship also has the Senior Women’s Amateur Championship being played concurrently with the Amateur. Players in the field aged 50 and above are entered into a 36-hole championship that will conclude tomorrow. After round one, Langevin, Kannegieser and Brandes sit in the top three positions of that event.
Tomorrow’s second round will commence at 7:30 am.
