Woodlands Team Claims Metropolitan Title
AUBURN – Teeing off toward the back of the field in the two-day Metropolitan Club Championship, a quartet of golfers from the Woodlands Club teamed up to fire a score of 67 (-5) to win the 2019 championship at Fox Ridge GC. Playing in a best ball competition with the lowest score on each hole counting toward the team score, the team of Mary Brandes, Laurie Hydnman, Catherine Keeley, and Cecily Whiting made six team birdies against a lone bogey on the 2nd hole to win the title by one stroke.
In this event, teams can be made up of members from different clubs to compete for Gross and Net prizes but are not eligible for the Club Team Championship prize. To be eligible for the title of Metropolitan Club Team Champion, all four team members must be from the same club and record the lowest gross score over the two days of competition.
The Woodlands squad eked out the win by one stroke over the team of Pennie Cummings (Springbrook GC), Kathleen Drake (Portland CC), Lori Frost (St. Croix CC) and Kristin Kannegieser (Martindale CC). They paired up to shoot a round of 68 (-4), three shots clear of third place.
During Monday’s round, Jennifer Stewart (Cape Arundel GC) carded a hole-in-one to the island green on Fox Ridge’s 89-yard 5th hole.
