32 Advance to Maine Amateur from Poland Spring

Jun 24, 2019

POLAND – In what may have been the longest qualifier in Maine history, 32 players finally advanced from the Poland Spring qualifier into the 100th Maine Amateur Championship. The qualifier began on Thursday, June 20 with 113 players in the event, which was halted by severe weather that came through the area in the early afternoon. After two delays for weather and lightning, play was suspended for the day, and due to the course being unplayable the next day, the Rules committee determined that play would resume at 7:30 am on Monday, June 24.

When the dust settled and the round finally came to a close on Monday morning, 32 players earned a berth in this year’s Maine Amateur Championship at Portland CC on July 9-11. Leading the way were the first two players to finish on Thursday morning, as Chris King (Val Halla GC) and Will Kannegieser (Martindale CC) shot 70 to earn medalist honors. Garrett Olson (Brunswick GC) and Jordan Jones (Bath GC) were next best with 73s.

Also of note from this qualifier was Kellen Adickes, a 12-year old from Nobleboro who advanced with a score of 76. Earning his first trip to the Maine Amateur, he is the youngest player to have a spot in next month's championship.

The cut at this qualifier fell at 79, with Wayne Fillion (Brunswick GC) earning the last spot in the field. The players who advanced today will join the 47 exempt players and the 29 qualifiers from the first qualifier at Biddeford-Saco CC on June 13. The third and final qualifier will be held this Thursday, June 27 at Waterville CC to complete the field for the championship proper.
