Cole and Plummer Defend Senior Four-Ball Title
SACO – It is said that defending a title is among the hardest things to do in sports, but it’s becoming a trend in the early MSGA championship season. Two weeks ago at Fairlawn GC the duo of Kristin and Will Kannegieser successfully defended their Mixed Championship from the year before, and it happened again at today’s Senior Four-Ball Championship at Biddeford-Saco CC. Len Cole (Falmouth CC) and Mark Plummer (Augusta CC) fired a blistering 62 (-9) in the second group of the day to win this event for the second straight year.
The duo started hot, birdieing three of the first four holes before dropping their only shot of the day on the par-4 5th hole. They quickly rebounded by picking up one more shot on the front nine to turn in -3. After two pars to start the back, Cole and Plummer got hot with birdies on 12, 14, 15, and 16, followed by a clinching eagle on 17. In the end, their 62 was good for a three stroke victory.
Mike O’Brien and Ron Dery from the host club—playing alongside Plummer and Cole—finished in solo second after a round of 65 (-6). O’Brien, a youngster in the field at 55 years old, fired 66 on his own ball in his first MSGA Senior championship. They edged David Kroll (Fox Ridge GC) and John Bowen (Falmouth CC), who shot 66.
Topping their third place gross finish were Kroll and Bowden who bested the field with the low net score of the day at 59 (-12). Tom Skelton and Paul Robinson (Martindale CC) came in second with 60, followed by a trio of teams at 61. They were Wayne Fillion and Jack Harkins (Brunswick GC); Paul L’heureux and Dick Gammon (Salmon Falls GC); and Bob Barber and Dan Bellemare (Biddeford-Saco CC).
