Kannegieser Qualifies for U.S Amateur
Williamstown, MA Ė Minotís Will Kannegieser might have to adjust his summer work schedule next month. The Martindale CC member and rising junior at Williams College used his home course knowledge at Williamís Taconic GC to earn a berth in next monthís United States Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach in California.
The qualifier is as much a test of skill as it is of endurance, with competitors playing 36 holes in one day. With three qualifying spots available for the entire field, Kannegieserís morning round of 72 left him in fourth place. Kannegieser then came out firing in the afternoon round to card a 65 in a round that included six birdies and an eagle. His two round total of 137 (-5) earned him medalist honors and a berth in the nationís most prestigious amateur championship. This will be the first USGA championship for Kannegieser, the 2013 and 2014 Maine Junior Champion.
This marks the 5th time that Pebble Beach will host the U.S. Amateur Championship. Nearby Spyglass Hill will share hosting duties for the first two rounds of stroke play qualifying before the top 64 advance to match play. The 118th playing of this event will take place August 13-19.
