Hardy Medalist, 23 Advance at Waterville
OAKLAND—The field for the 99th Maine Amateur Championship is now set, with the final qualifier now in the books after a cold and wet day at Waterville CC. Jon Hardy (Samoset Resort GC) led all players in the field today with a score of 72 (+2) to claim medalist honors and lead the group of 23 players that will advance to the championship proper at Belgrade Lakes GC on July 10-12.
Playing in the first group of the day, Hardy played steady golf all the way around, making two bogeys against one birdie on each side to finish at two-over par. Chandler Longfellow (Boothbay Harbor CC) was one back of Hardy with 73. At trio of players finished in third at 74, including Waterville CC members Drew Glasheen and Lance Libby. The cut for today’s qualifier fell at 79, and oddly enough, this was the third qualifier this year where there was no match of cards, with everyone at 79 getting through to Belgrade Lakes
This was the third and final qualifier for the Maine Amateur Championship, which takes place in two weeks. In all, 77 players earned spots in the championship via three qualifiers, starting at Biddeford-Saco CC on June 14 and Poland Spring GC on June 21 before today’s final event. The qualifying players will join a group of 55 exempt players to complete the 132 player field at the central Maine course in Mid-July.
