Nevers Medalist, 23 Advance at Poland Spring
POLAND—Scott Nevers (Dunegrass GC) got off to a sluggish start to his qualifying round at Poland Spring GC, but shot a three under par 34 on his second nine to shoot 72 to lead the field and earn a berth in the 2018 Maine Amateur Championship. Nevers was five over par after five holes of play, but played bogey free the rest of his round with four birdies and no dropped shots.
In all, 23 players booked their tickets to the championship proper, to be contested at Belgrade Lakes GC on July 10-12. The cut for today’s event fell at 78, the same number as in the first qualifier at Biddeford-Saco CC. Tim Landry (Falmouth CC) was second today with a 74, followed by a quintet of players at 75.
The final qualifier will be played on Monday, June 25 at Waterville CC, where players will vie for the final 23 spots in the most prestigious amateur championship in the Pine Tree State.
