McFarlane Medalist, 31 Qualify at Biddeford-Saco
SACO – Reese McFarlane (Purpoodock Club) has been making it a habit of shooting scores under par in MSGA events this summer, and he continued that trend today at Biddeford-Saco CC, shooting 69 to lead all qualifiers and finish as medalist at the first Maine Amateur qualifier today. In the last few weeks McFarlane carded a 60 at Fairlawn and 64 at Webhannet in MSGA weekend events, showing he’s still in top form following his spring season at UNC-Wilmington. The southpaw from Cape Elizabeth made six birdies on his day to finish with the low score of the day by three strokes.
A group of four players finished with scores of 72 (+1) to tie for second. In all, 31 players booked their tickets to next month’s championship proper at Belgrade Lakes GC, the first time the championship will be contested at the central Maine club. The cut for the Biddeford-Saco qualifier fell at 78, with no match of cards needed to break any ties for the final spot.
The second qualifying tournament will take place next Thursday, June 21, at Poland Spring GC. The final qualifier is at Waterville CC on June 25.
