Cole, Plummer Win Senior Four-Ball
CAPE ELIZABETH – Len Cole (Falmouth CC) has only been eligible for the MSGA Senior Tour for less than a year, but the 55 year old has been making the most of his brief time on the circuit. Cole partnered with Mark Plummer (Augusta CC) today to shoot a four-under par 67 to win the 2018 Senior Four-Ball Championship at Purpoodock Club. Playing in a four-ball format, more often referred to as better ball, the duo made seven birdies against one bogey and one double bogey to win the event by three shots.
Just a few weeks ago at Belgrade Lakes in the Senior Club Team Championship, Cole was part of a team with fellow Falmouth members that were co-champions with a team from Purpoodock Club. He kept up his solid play this past weekend, shooting even par over two rounds and winning the Downeast Metro Amateur at Bangor Municipal and Kebo Valley. Today he stayed in form by making five birdies to help his partner.
It was a team effort though and wasn’t all Cole, as Plummer played well and carded four birdies of his own. Despite all his success over his long and storied career in Maine, this was only the second time that the 13-time Maine Amateur champion has won this event. He partnered with Dick Perkins to win the 2009 Senior Four-Ball at Poland Spring.
The team of Tom Ellsworth and Gary Manoogian (Falmouth CC) were the only other team to break par on the day, shooting a score of 70 (-1) and finishing solo second. Three teams tied for third at even par.
On the net side, Cole Kelly and Fred Fasulo won with a score of 62 (-9). The two members at the host club took advantage of their local knowledge to win by one stroke over Stephen Gallagher and Paul Haase (Dunegrass GC) and Stephen Dixon and Mark Jordan (Gorham CC).
Thanks to Purpoodock Club for hosting this sold out event and providing a great site for the 12th Senior Four-Ball Championship.
