Falmouth CC, Purpoodock Club Win Senior Club Team
Headline: Falmouth CC, Purpoodock Club Win 2018 Senior Club Team Championship
Belgrade Lakes, ME – Playing under clear and sunny skies and fighting a wind that gusted all day long, Falmouth CC and Purpoodock Club ended the day as co-champions for the 2018 Senior Club Team Championship. The Falmouth team consisted of Len Cole, Tom Ellsworth, Gary Manoogian, and Cash Wiseman. Purpoodock was represented by Jonathan Brogan, Tom Chard, Jim McFarlane, and Rick Robichaud. Both teams shot a score of 137 (-5) to edge the perennial contenders from Augusta CC (Nelson Gosline, Mike Nowak, Jim Quinn, and Mark Plummer) by one stroke.
This is the first title in this event for either of these clubs. In the always difficult best two-of-four ball format, the Falmouth team combined for six birdies, four of which came from Wiseman. The team dropped only one shot on the day, with a bogey at the difficult par-4 9th hole. The Purpoodock squad made seven team birdies against two bogeys to get to the winning score of five under par.
On the net side of the event, the team from Wilson Lake GC (Dan DiPompo, Stew Durrell, Gregory Nemi, Randy Oliver) shot a blistering score of 120 (-22) in the final group of the day to win by one shot over Sable Oaks GC (Paul Robinson, Russ Scudder, Steven Shugars, Thomas Skelton).
The MSGA would like to thank the entire staff and grounds crew at Belgrade Lakes GC for their hospitality and terrific course conditions for the back-to-back championships this week to start our championship season. We are thrilled to be returning to the central Maine club for the 99th Maine Amateur Championship for the first time in the event’s history. The 2018 Maine Amateur will take place July 10-12.
