Belgrade Lakes, ME – For the third time in six years, a team from Martindale CC has claimed the MSGA’s season-opening Club Team Championship at Belgrade Lakes GC. Though the Martindale team has changed rosters over the years, the result has been the same, with another win from the Auburn club thanks to a clean scorecard that had no bogeys. The team of Joe Baker, Craig Chapman, Jace Pearson, and Andrew Slattery won the best two-of-four ball event with a score of 131 (-11) to win by two shots over the defending champions from JW Parks GC.

Everyone on the Martindale squad chimed in for the team score in the demanding format, with Chapman leading the way with five birdies on his own ball. Baker made three, Slattery had two, and Pearson had one to add and help the team get to -11. The defending champions from JW Parks (Bob Ballard, Eric Dugas, Gavin Dugas, Carter Pearl) did well in their title defense, but ultimately fell short by two shots with 133 (-9). Teams from Val Halla GC and Augusta CC shared third place with a score of 134 (-8).
On the net side, the Val Halla GC team of Chris King, Jim McKay, Mike Steinberg, and Ryan Wingard had the winning score with 126 (-16).
The championship season keeps going tomorrow with the Senior Club Team Championship at Belgrade Lakes for the second day in a row. The Senior Club Team event mirrors today’s championship in its format, except all players from each team are aged 55 and older.
In addition to the Club Team and Senior Club Team events, the MSGA is excited to be hosting the 99th Maine Amateur Championship at Belgrade Lakes GC this summer. The state’s top amateur players will compete July 10-12 at Belgrade Lakes for the first time in the event’s history.
