Stromberg & Plourde Win Mixed Championship
The 2020 Mixed Championship took place on Sunday, August 2nd at Turner Highlands GC, with a full field of teams competing in the always difficult alternate shot format. At the end of the day, the duo of Hans Stromberg and Bailey Plourde ran away with the title, shooting a bogey-free 62 for a five stroke victory. Plourde plays golf for Centre College in Kentucky, where she met Stromberg as well. He is spending the summer in Maine this year and playing at Sheepscot Links with Plourde, and the two fared quite well in their debut as a team.
Playing in a modified alternate shot, both players tee off on each hole and hit their partner's ball for the second shot. After those strokes, one ball is selected and shots are alternated until the ball is holed. On the day, Plourde and Stromberg didn't drop a single shot, racking up seven birdies and one eagle en route to victory.
Two teams finished tied for second place with a score of 67 (-4), including host-club members Ruby Haylock and Tim Doyle, Jr., who shared second with Ruth Collucci and Scott Dewitt of Biddeford-Saco CC.
On the net side, there was a log jam of four teams that tied for the win. They were Susan Gilpatrick-Smart and John Smart, Kathy-Rae Emmi and Jeff Sweet, James and Sandy Osterrieder, and Tina and James Hanley. All four teams shot a score of 65 (-6).
The married couples division was won by Patrick and Catherine Keeley at 73. Net couples winners were tied at 70, with Nancy and Philip Carlson sharing the honors with Hannah and Kevin Noonan.
