Bean, Downing Win Senior Four-Ball Championship

Players were treated to abundant sunshine and warm weather for the 11th playing of the Senior Four-Ball Championship at Riverside GC today, and the scores reflected the summer-like weather thatís finally arrived in Maine. In the end, the team of Tom Bean (Augusta CC) and John Downing (Purpoodock Club) prevailed with a score of 65 (-7). This is the second win for the duo, who claimed their first Senior Four-Ball Championship in 2013 at Poland Spring.

The Senior Four-Ball features teams of two players competing in four-ball stroke play, with each golfer playing his own ball and the low score on each hole counting for the team score. Bean and Downing paired eight birdies against only one bogey for their round, with Bean birdieing the final two holes to secure their two stroke victory.

Tom Chard and Rick Robichaud (Purpoodock Club) finished with birdies on four of the last five holes to shoot 67 (-5) to capture second place. In third were Richard Bachelder (York G&TC) and Jim McFarlane (Purpoodock Club), tied with John Bouchard and Randy Smith (Biddeford-Saco CC) with 68 (-4).

In the net flight, Stephen Gallagher and Paul Haase (Dunegrass GC) led the way with a score of 56 (-16). Their gross score of 67 would have been good enough for second gross, but the team was given precedence in the net flight. Jonathan Fillmore (Freeport CC) and David Littlefield (Sunset Ridge GC) were tied second net with 58 (-14), along with Paul Connolly (Natanis GC) and Wade Trudel (Poland Spring GC).
