A total of 53 players are already exempt in the field of 132. Another 217 players will attempt to qualify for the remaining 79 spots. At Biddeford-Saco on Tuesday, June 26, 38 players out of the field of 104 will make it while on Thursday at Fox Ridge, 16 players of the 45 attempting to do so will qualify. The final qualifier will take place at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono on July 3, where 68 players will compete for 25 spots. If there are any ties at any of the venues, they will be broken by using the USGA tie breaking method, which uses the total scores from the last nine holes, then the last six, then the last three, then the 18th hole. Defending champion Ryan Gay will try to win his fourth title and his third in a row when the action starts at Sunday River. The 21-year-old is one of four former winners in the field, including Ricky Jones and Ron Brown, both who have two titles, and the all-time leader among Maine champions, Mark Plummer, with 13 victories. As the defending champ, Gay will be joined in the first group by defending Maine Mid-Amateur champion Joe Alvarez and defending Maine Senior Amateur Champion Mark Plummer.
