Alvarez defeats Jones in Mid-Amateur Championship playoff

POLAND, ME -- Ricky Jones is the MSGA Player of the Year. He represented Maine in the USGA Amateur Championship. He's won several Maine championships, including the Maine Amateur title, the Mid-Amateur title, and even is one of just a handful of amateurs to win the Maine Open title.

But on Sunday at Fairlawn Golf Club in Poland, Joe Alvarez repeated his last year's Mid-Amateur championship title by defeating Jones in a two-hole playoff. The two were the only players under par in the first round of the tournament Saturday at Martindale Country Club, shooting one-under 70s. Both players came in at even par 72 on Sunday, forcing the playoff. While both players parred the first hole, Alvarez also parred the second hole to secure the victory.

Of course, Alvarez is no slouch and actually finished as one of the top three players in Maine this year, representing Maine in the USGA State Team championship in Texas last month. After the first round, he was tied for fourth. Alvarez would also have represented Maine in the Tri-State Championship last week at Augusta CC, but he had a personal conflict -- Saturday was his wedding day.

Congratulations to Joe on his second Mid-Amateur Championship victory. The Mid-Amateur concludes the MSGA's championship season. Thank you all for your continued support and please tune in for our weekly amateur results, which will take place through the first week in November. Thank you for your continued interst in Maine Amateur golf. Please find to follow complete two-round results of this weekend's tournament.
